Demonstration Features
CoAX Binni 2000
The events of the CoAX Binni 2000 (9 month) demonstration focused on
the initial planning phase. After exploring a number of options to
separate and observe the continued peace of the region, a large ground
observation and peace keeping force has been rejected, and a
"Firestorm" mission codenamed "Operation Flash" has been decided
upon. This will clear land to enable simpler remote and ground
observations with less risk to the coalition peacekeepers. The events
of the 2000 demonstration showed the coalition doing initial
information gathering and planning. The coalition participants are
the USA, UK, Australia and Goa. Gao has host nation status but it's
intentions are unclear and it is distrusted. Special steps are taken
to monitor the information passed to and from Gao within the
coalition.
During the demonstration, misinformation feeds intended to displace
the firestorm to allow Gao to take an advantage and move forward are
detected and thwarted. Gao becomes belligerent and launches a denial
of service attack against the coalition's C4I infrastructure. This is
automatically detected and thwarted using the advanced agent
capabilities available to the coalition.
CoAX Binni 2001
The events of the CoAX Binni 2001 (18-month) demonstration move on
from this initial planning and information gathering phase to the
execution, monitoring and replanning associated with coalition
operations. The firestorm mission has been planned and aircraft are
being prepared for their missions. However the news media breaks a
story that wildlife in an important safari park in Binni may be at
danger as the park overlaps the firestorm area. The UN Secretary
general's Special Representative to Binni asks the Joint Task Force
Commander to consider the wildlife risk aspects of the planned
approach. After consideration it is decided to continue with the
firestorm mission, but to replan as necessary to avoid any specific
targets that would risk wildlife. Dynamic information gathering and
information feeds using agent technology are employed to create a real
time feed of the position of some at risk large mammals. Firestorm
targets are adjusted in time or secondary targets selected as
necessary for the first wave of firestorm bombing.
Agadez seeks to use this complication to seize the initiative and
launches fighter attacks against coalition airborne high value assets
that are monitoring the operation. This is detected and important
monitoring agents are moved to alternative computational platforms to
allow the monitoring aircraft to regress.
Screen Movies
CoAX Screen Movies
There are two formats for the screen movies. One uses a standard AVI
codec (Microsoft RLE) that should be installed by default on Windows media
players. The other format uses
Techsmith Camtasia screen
recording format (using a high compression codec
which leads to much smaller files for downloading). They are packaged
as Windows AVIs which require the
TSCC codec. TSCC.exe is available
separately to install just the codec ahead of running the screen
movies if required
(Windows .exe file 191KB).
Administrator user rights are required to install the codec
on Windows NT or Windows 2000.
The screen movies are 1024x768 pixels in size and should be run full
screen on playback. Full screen playback on Windows Media Player can
be toggled with Alt+Enter. You can also use the freely available
Techsmith Camtasia Player
for simple playback of the screen movies.
On Apple Macintosh, the AVI files should automatically convert to
Quicktime, if you have a recent version of Quicktime installed (e.g.,
4.1 or later). Otherwise you can get an older version of the AVI-to-QT
utility at

CoAX Demo Part 0:
- Introduction:
- Two (fictional) countries, Gao (in the north) and Agadez (in the
south), are in conflict over an area of land that was annexed by Gao
and set up as a new state called Binni. Gao has called on the UN to
protect Binni and a Coalition Force has been deployed to stabilise the
region. In the previous CoAX Binni 2000 demonstration we showed the
information gathering phase at the start of Campaign Planning for a
Firestorm mission.
- This demonstration (CoAX Binni 2001 or the so-called the 18-month
demo) starts by explaining that the UN forces have been deployed for
some time and that we are now focusing on the more challenging
Execution Phase of conflict and on one part of one day of the conflict
(29th Sep 2012 at 1500) for which the plans have been produced and the
orders issued. We will feature the monitoring of the execution of the
Firestorm mission and will see that media concerns about the location
of wildlife in the Laki Safari Park and of Agadez / Gao forces will
cause short-notice replanning to take place with only minutes to
spare. New orders will have to be disseminated, plan elements
deconflicted and events tracked and handled. Also, we will see the
opponents, Agadez, fly hostile air-to-air missions against UN
"high-value assets" such as the AWACS and JSTARS - with both humans
and agents responding.
- The events involved in the earlier CoAX Binni 2000 (9 month)
demonstration have taken place.
- MBP has been used to produce plans for the Firestorm mission
in South Western Binni.
- Aircraft have been prepared and are about to begin their missions.
- The I-LEED process panel for the JTF Commander has been used to note
the activity to date.
CoAX Demo Part 1:
- 29 Sep 2012 - 1505: At the start of the 18-month CoAX Binni
2001 Demonstration:
- Information about the Firestorm has leaked to the media and there are
concerns about the protected mammals in the Laki Safari Park. The UN
Special Representative orders the JTFC to consider alternatives to the
Firestorm mission. The JTFC tasks the JFACC to report on: moving
objects in Firestorm area, ground activity by Gao / Agadez and to
report the time left before the 'cancel Firestorm mission' might have
to be given.
CoAX Demo Part 2:
- 1515: JFAC HQ / Combat Ops Staff Consider Options:
- The JFAC HQ / CCO staff enter to-do actions to meet the tasking into
the Event Panel (EP). They use MBP Ops to find out time left for
decisions (106 mins at most to TOT, 48 minutes to commit). EP used to
confirm action to JTFC.
CoAX Demo Part 3:
- 1520: Information on Mammals in Laki Safari Park Located:
- Combat Ops staff try to locate wildlife info - RFI initiated and
Internet searched. MNBLI used to identify animal movement
trends. Staff subscribe to the e-Gents service to obtain customised
information.
CoAX Demo Part 4:
- 1525: Near-real-time update from Laki Added to Coalition
Situation Viewer:
- Combat Ops staffs create feed to MBP Ops / Coalition SitViewer from
Laki site using Ariadne wrapper and XSLT Translator. Staff update
Event Panel to show task achieved.
CoAX Demo Part 5:
- 1526: Ground Observations of Vehicle Movements Changed:
- The JTFC authorises Firestorm 'Go' (NB: mission to NE area diverted to
2ndry target and re-tasked later - this event added to Event
Panel). Dartmouth Observer ground vehicle movement info sent to
Coalition and displayed on SitViewer etc. This shows Gao and Agadez
forces advancing towards each other into Firestorm area. Also,
resource usage priorities are changed in the Observer domain to hasten
notification of further ground movements.
CoAX Demo Part 6:
- 1535: Part of Firestorm Package diverted to Secondary Target
- change is Deconflicted:
- Change / diversion of Firestorm NE Package to secondry target must now be
deconflicted with existing plans. MBP Ops is used to generate a
changed plan which is sent to the MCA for deconfliction with plans
from the rest of the Coalition. Conflicts are detected with two helo
flights: a MedEvac mission and a Ground Observer extraction from Laki.
CoAX Demo Part 7:
- 1601: Agadez Mount High-value Asset Attack on UN JSTARS:
- Agadez fighters start a HVAA which is detected and displayed on the
Coalition SitViewer (the attack is noted in Event Panel, UNWAFB AD
activated and PP informed - not part of the demonstration) - the
JSTARS must 'regress' and so observer agents on board 'SCRAM' to an
alternative processing platform".
